I remember watching James Clavell’s Shōgun broken up into a mini series as a kid. In my twenties I read the book. Clavell’s storytelling blew me away, along with his imagination to create such an original story about an English sailor who lands in feudal Japan. I later learned it wasn’t a total act of fiction, Clavell based it off a real story.
A new version of Shōgun has been released for TV with much fanfare. I’ve been enjoying it myself. In honor of the re-release, I’ll be revisiting an article I wrote about the true character Shōgun is based on. In fact, this whole week’s pieces will be about Japan.
My second article will focus on one of Japan’s greatest philosophers and samurais, Miyamoto Musashi. Oddly, both men were alive on the island at the same time.
