Hello all,
I’m planning on doing something a little different for Christmas. For this addition, for the first time in this pub’s history, a post will be duplicated. I’m doing it for two reasons:
It’s utterly timely.
I’m hoping this can be a new tradition for both me and you.
Every year we’re graced with various versions of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. While there are many messages within this timeless classic, there’s one hidden that’s relevant to our modern world in ways many miss.
I want to spread this message with every seasonal recurrence of A Christmas Carol. It’s necessary to combat a certain type of hatred that’s become all too prevalent in our present day - a hatred of ourselves.
Diminishing the value of humanity as a species can lead to nowhere positive. Over the 20th and 21st century it’s led to genocidal rampages, and addiction by those who see themselves as valueless. But this modern idea wasn’t lost on Dickens. He experienced a similar self-loathing of humanity from people in his day.
A Christmas Carol was his testament against this type of thinking, along with a transformational story we can learn from. I hope Dickens’ message haunts us pleasantly every Christmas, and reminds both me and you of its powerful lesson for all of humanity.
Due to Christmas falling on a Wednesday, the story will be posted the day before.
Thanks for spending this year with me; have a Merry Christmas, and hopefully this can become a new tradition for all of us.
